I just paid attention to the most epic dish of the “Сhristmas hօlidays” that I have watched at least 25 times.
“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Randy Quaid, Juliette Lewis, and even Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is a hilarious story about the Griswold family’s attempt to have a traditional Christmas celebration. It is a must-watch holiday film in my home every year. I’ve seen the film well over 25 times since its 1989 premiere. Nevertheless,
I had to ask myself, “Are you serious, Clark?” when I noticed a dish on the Griswold family’s holiday table this year while watching the movie with my spouse. In front of Beverly D’Angelo at the Christmas Eve dinner scene in the movie is an odd holiday side dish. No, it’s not Aunt Bethany’s cat-food-flavored Jell-O. This year, something drew my attention: an asparagus-based Christmas tree embellished with elements often found on a relish tray, such as tiny red peppers, pearl onions, and olives filled with pimento.
I looked at the tree and told my husband, “Wait, pause it.” “What’s that object?”
Apparently, I’m not the only one who wants to know. The “tall, green thing” on the table is the subject of a whole Reddit conversation, and in 2022, YesterYear Retro blogger Jeff Sheldon made a detailed post about it. Sheldon stated in the blog entry, “It was a giant, green tower of something right in front of Ellen Griswold.” “After pausing the film, my spouse and I gazed at the screen for some time, and eventually she remarked, ‘It appears to be a vegetable Christmas tree.'” It was an asparagus tree, so she wasn’t incorrect.
Being a huge fan of Ellen Griswold from the Christmas movies, I decided to attempt making this classic dish myself. In the end,
