Abba, Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, and Other Rock Stars to Perform on New Year’s Eve

Abba, Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, and Other Rock Stars to Perform on New Year’s Eve

With Taylor Swift, ‘NSync, and Mariah Carey, who needs “Auld Lang Syne”?

Though there are still plenty of New Year’s Eve tunes to blast as the last moments of the year tick down, December 31 is still resounding with the sounds of Christmas music. Although Scottish poet Robert Burns wrote the traditional song “Auld Lang Syne” in 1788, there are also more modern songs to enjoy on New Year’s Eve while sipping champagne and flashing those 2024 glasses. Classic songs by Carla Thomas, Otis Redding, Nat “King” Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald are included. An hymn steeped in fuzz for the broke and brokenhearted is released by Death Cab for Cutie.

To listen to before Carey’s club hit, there’s even a great ska song by Montreal’s The Planet Smashers. For those slower occasions, there are even some slow music by Barry Manilow and Abba. You might include a lot of songs that have nothing to do with New Year’s Eve to your playlist in addition to the ones below. Every time the clock strikes midnight and you’re meant to kiss someone for good luck, Prince’s “Kiss” is a great tune to play. If you’re feeling hair metal, “The Final Countdown” by Europe is a fantastic listen. The 1987 song “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” by R.E.M. was originally written as a satirical New Year’s Eve song, but in light of current political and environmental unrest, it is more relevant than ever.
