‘Charmed’ behind-the-scenes drama throughout time: A chronology

We shall be freed by the power of three, except from drama.
Four years after Shannen Doherty was famously fired from Spelling Television’s Beverly Hills, 90210, Aaron Spelling cast her as one of the three Halliwell sisters in Charmed, which debuted on The WB in 1998. This decision generated headlines from the first.
Creator Constance M. Burge remembered to InTouch in 2018 that “[Aaron] was extremely supportive of the idea of casting Shannen Doherty as Prue,” adding that the filmmakers wanted the actress for the role in part because of her chemistry with Holly Marie Combs.

Holly and Shannen had a great relationship because Holly had been on Picket Fences and they were close friends at the time. Lori Rom was supposed to round out the trio as Phoebe, the youngest sister, while Doherty and Combs played Prue and Piper, respectively. Alyssa Milano replaced Rom in the role after they shot the pilot. Although the on-screen chemistry between the Halliwell sisters was strong, there were a lot of behind-the-scenes difficulties, and history was repeated when Doherty left the show after three seasons. After hearing rumors that Milano and Doherty weren’t friends, Doherty later spoke out.

At the time, Doherty told Entertainment Tonight, “there was not enough passion for the work and too much drama on the set.” “You know, at thirty years old, I have no time left for drama in my life. It seems like whatever to me. I really just want to make it known that I will truly miss Holly a lot. “She is one of my best friends, and I love her very much,” she went on. We will always be friends, and there have never, ever been any issues between the two of us.
Charmed continued for five more seasons with Combs, Milano, and Doherty, despite Combs’s initial claims that she wasn’t sure if she wanted to continue on the show without her then-bestie.
