Following his wife Hayley Erbert’s “nightmare” brain surgery, Derek Hough is “filled with hope.”
Derek Hough gave an update one week after his wife Hayley Erbert underwent emergency brain surgery, saying that he is beginning to feel “relief.”
The Dancing With the Stars judge, 38, stated in a video that was uploaded to Instagram on Friday, December 15, “As you all know, the past week has been a challenging journey for us due to a life-threatening event that suddenly came into our lives.”
In the footage, he could be seen walking around Washington, D.C. with Erbert, who was wearing a helmet. It was a frightening and uncertain time to go from living our dreams on stage to a nightmare. We are, nevertheless, relieved and full of hope as we share this information with you today. After the event, Erbert, 29, is “doing well,” but Hough said her recovery “has been nothing short of a miracle.” Erbert was taken to the hospital on December 6th, following a performance of Hough’s “A Symphony of Dance” in Washington, D.C., due to confusion.
After receiving a diagnosis of cerebral hematoma, she had an urgent craniectomy. After they were married on August 26, Hough made it clear that his wife’s recovery “still has a ways to go”. “Inserting a skull implant to replace the piece that was removed during the craniectomy” would be her next treatment, Hough said. “It will protect the brain from injury and restore the skull to its natural shape.”
Acknowledging Erbert’s superb medical team, the choreographer expressed gratitude to the audience for their “incredible support.”
