12/23, 7 p.m. ET UPDATE: Following their discovery of Laura Lynch’s untimely demise, Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire, and Emily Strayer—current members of The Chicks—released a statement.
On Saturday, December 23, they posted on Instagram, saying, “We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks.” “The moments we had laughing, traveling, and making music together will always have a particular place in our hearts.

Laura was a shining star; our band’s early days were energized by her contagious enthusiasm and sense of humor. Laura was a major contributor to the band’s early success since she had a knack for design and a passion for all things Texas. Her indisputable skills enabled us to go beyond street corner busking. Laura Lynch, one of The Chicks’ founding members, passed away on Friday, December 22, following an automobile accident. She was sixty-five. On Saturday, December 23, Laura’s cousin Mick Lynch told TMZ that her death occurred the previous day outside of El Paso, Texas. Laura was driving on a highway when her car was involved in a head-on collision, according to Mick.

Later, Texas law enforcement sources told TMZ that the unknown driver tried to pass another car in the lane before hitting Laura’s vehicle. On the spot, Laura was pronounced deceased. Her death’s circumstances have not been made public.
