On Sunday, January 7, the 81st Golden Globes marked the formal start of the 2024 awards season, with some of Hollywood’s hottest stars attending the huge event.
December 2023 saw the announcement of nominations. With nine nominations apiece, Barbie and Succession were the films with the most. With eight nominations overall, Oppenheimer lagged well behind its box office rivals and went on to win more accolades than any other movie. On the television front, beloved shows The Bear and Only Murders in the Building each had five chances to win.
Two new categories were introduced at the ceremony on Sunday. The first round of contenders for the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award were Barbie and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. The film recognized films with a minimum domestic gross of $100 million and a global total of $150 million. Meanwhile, contestants for the inaugural Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television prize included Trevor Noah, Wanda Sykes, and others.
