“Bloody Summer” and “Good Trouble” canceled on Freeform

Variety has confirmed that Freeform will not be releasing any more seasons of “Cruel Summer” or “Good Trouble.”

Season 2 of “Cruel Summer,” an anthology series, traced the emergence and dissolution of a close teenage friendship. “Tracking the early friendship between Megan, Isabella, and her best friend Luke, the burgeoning love triangle, and the mystery that would impact all of their lives going forward, the season twists and turns,” the official description states. “Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K.”

Freeform made waves with its highly successful first season, which quickly became the network’s most watched series ever with an average multiplatform+35 viewership of 6.8 million viewers per episode. Freeform president Tara Duncan called the decision to quickly renew the show for a second season in 2021.

Creator Bert V. Royal left “Cruel Summer” and Freeform in July 2021, as Variety previously reported. Royal left the network after the pilot wrapped up filming the previous year, citing creative differences as the reason. For the first season of the show, he was still listed as the creator and executive producer.

Elle Triedman joined the show in Season 2, taking Tia Napolitano’s place as showrunner. Together with Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple of Iron Ocean Productions and Bill Purple, Napolitano continued to serve as executive producer. It was supported by eOne.
