The Cause of Death of Matthew Perry Disclosed

Two months after his death, Matthew Perry’s cause of death was determined.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office reports that “the acute effects of ketamine” were the cause of Perry’s death. Contributing causes were coronary artery disease, the effects of buprenorphine (a medication used to treat opiate use), and drowning, according to a toxicology report that was made public on Friday, December 15. It was determined that the actor died in an accident. On October 28, Perry passed away at the age of 54 at home in Los Angeles.

Perry was discovered unconscious in his hot tub when authorities arrived at the scene of a reported cardiac arrest. At the site, there were no indications of foul play.  After his first autopsy, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner stated on October 30 that the cause of death had been “deferred.” After a toxicology report was obtained, it was decided that the results were inconclusive, and a request was made for additional research to ascertain Perry’s cause of death.

During the run of the NBC comedy Friends from 1994 to 2004, Perry gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the sardonic Chandler Bing, one of the original six leads. In addition, he starred in movies including Fools Rush In, The Whole Nine Yards, and 17 Again. For his performance on the television series Friends, The West Wing, The Ron Clark Story, and Friends: The Reunion, he received five Emmy nominations. With the release of his memoir Friends, Lovers & The Big Terrible Thing in 2022, the actor shot to fame as a best-selling author.
