Laura Lynch, a founding member of Dixie Chicks, died at age 65 in a car accident.

The Chicks are in grief over a member of their own. In a vehicle accident, Laura Lynch, who co-founded the country band when they made their debut as the Dixie Chicks more than 30 years ago, passed away. She was sixty-five. According to the state’s Department of Public Safety and local station WFAA, the musician, who was the group’s former lead singer and upright bass player, died in a head-on collision on a highway near El Paso, Texas, on December 22. According to the organization, the collision is still being looked into.
“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks,” the group posted on Instagram along with a vintage clip of their first performance from the 1990s. “We hold a special place in our hearts for the time we spent playing music, laughing and traveling together.”

Originally a bluegrass group, the Dixie Chicks comprised Laura, Robin Lynn Macy, and sisters Martie and Emily. They were formed in 1989. The 1973 song “Dixie Chicken” by Little Feat served as the basis for their moniker. “We said, ‘What about the Dixie Chickens?'” In 1992, Laura reminisced on Entertainment Tonight. ‘I don’t know about being chickens,’ everyone said. Thus, Martie and Emily, the females, abbreviated it to Dixie Chicks.”

That year, Robin broke up with the group. The band’s frontwoman at the time, Laura, left the group in 1995 after three albums had been recorded. Natalie took the brunette singer’s position. The group became known as The Chicks in 2020.
